HOW FOUR CORNERS TRANSFORMED THE JAMES’ BEAUTIFUL FAMILY HOME
After finally finding their dream Edwardian home, Donna and Gary chose Four Corners to help them bring the tired property back to its former glory. They came to us looking for a kitchen, but were so impressed we ended up fitting a number of rooms in their beautiful period property.
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
Home design shows are a great place to go if your’e looking for inspiration. Whether you’re planning a self-build, renovation or simply adding the finishing touches, you’ll be introduced to some great companies willing to help, along with some top expert advice.
The James’ moved into their dream family home, but were unsure where to start with the renovations, as there is a lot to consider when renovating a period property. Therefore, having never done anything like it before, they decided the best place to feed their inspiration would be the Grand Designs Show in Birmingham. After traipsing around all day and collecting a trolley-full of brochures, they finally stumbled across the Four Corners stand and decided the kitchen would be a great place to start. They were impressed with the quality of the craftsmanship, as well as the helpful friendly nature of the Four corners team, so collected a brochure and made an appointment to be measured up.
“The display was impressive! It oozed with quality and we found the people to be very helpful”

THE HEART OF THE HOME
The kitchen is often the biggest and most challenging job when it comes to house renovation, so is generally a good place to start.
For the James’ the kitchen is the heartbeat of their house, it’s where everyone congregates, so they knew it had to look impressive as well as being functional. They wanted it to be planned meticulously to make the most of the space and period charm of the property, so we were careful to make sure our designs upheld its character, while offering a quirky modern twist.
They opted for our best selling Traditional range, featuring beading on the doors and drawers, keeping with the period style. Then added a splash of colour! They chose a bold traditional paint to make it their own, as well as to create focal points. These included the island, the dining room dresser and they canopy over the Aga. Finally came the addition of some innovative must have appliances, a cool drawer and brilliant 5 in 1 tap. A cool drawer is a great enhancement to your kitchen. They provide a multifunctional cooling space, with five different temperature settings, so you can effortlessly turn your drawer from a freezer to a drinks cooler. However, the real show stopping appliance is the 5 in 1 tap, providing hot, cold, boiling, chilled and even sparkling water instantaneously. Gone are the days of waiting for the kettle to boil.
When it came to installation there were a few obstacles to overcome, as with any renovation, but it was nothing we couldn’t handle. Two walls had to be knocked down to create the open plan space, capable of keeping up with the needs of modern family life. This caused the floors and ceilings in this space to become unaligned, so that had to be taken into consideration to allow the rooms to still seamlessly flow together. However, with all this accomplished, the most difficult decision actually came to be the choice of colour. The kitchen changed colour a couple of times over the build, but we didn’t mind, after all we wanted the James’ to have their dream kitchen.
The end result is breathtaking. It’s warm, inviting and has definitely got the wow factor. Everything has been put in the right place for easy working access from the Aga to the island, from the sink to the dishwasher. It all flows through lovely from kitchen to dining area to orangery.
“We particularly love the hot tap, as we have a lot of visitors, so it’s quick and easy for a cuppa”

CREATING SOMETHING THAT BELONGED
Half way through fitting the kitchen, the James’ knew Four Corners were the company they wanted to fit the rest of their home.
The library was the next challenge. They had envisioned a whole wall from floor to ceiling with book shelves and cupboards, reminiscent of those in stately homes. There was also a magnificent old mirror they wanted to be in the centre piece of the wall unit. James at Four Corners cleverly incorporated the mirror into the design, which slides back to reveal a gin bar capable of holding one hundred bottles. He even matched the wood stain of the mirror so it looks as though it belongs. The wall unit now looks original to the house and when guests come to visit they can believe its new.
“When we have visitors we slide back the mirror and they are stunned, it’s like a magic show”

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS TOO MUCH STORAGE
The James’ decided to knock some more walls through upstairs to create bigger bedrooms with their own dressing rooms.
For the newly formed bedrooms and dressing rooms they again wanted floor to ceiling units that were coherent with the feel of the rest of the property. We began crafting a combination of double hanging wardrobes, shelves, drawers and shoe storage to fill the master bedroom dressing room. Even adding a lovely free standing storage seat to finish off the room. However the James’ felt they needed more storage space, so we fitted more wardrobes in the same style in the bedroom itself, along with a lovely window bench. They now have plenty of space, as well as more space to grow into. Their eldest son had a multitude of stuff that would usually be strewn all over the bedroom floor, like most teenagers rooms. But now is neatly hidden away in the fitted wardrobes. We again added fitted shoe racks in one cupboard, which he loves as much as him numerous pairs. These units were then finished in a lighter oak stain, in order to make the bedrooms feel light and open.
“This is a lovely natural wood look and will never compromise your decor. Timeless!”

IF IN DOUBT, BUILD A BAR
They decided there was only one thing they could do with their neglected cellar. Create another bar!
The dark and dingy cellar was in need of a transformation, and that came in the shape of a fantastic fully functioning bar! The James’ built the bar themselves but were in need of the crowning glory, a carefully crafted bespoke bar top. Again James helped with this, providing a charming piece of woodwork that finished the bar off beautifully. The James’ christened the bar last new years eve and since then have had countless memories with family and friends.
“The transformation is beyond our wildest dreams”
